Switchgear – A Brief Description

electrical switchgear

Switchgear is a generic term from the industry that is sometimes used interchangeably with—but should not be mistaken for—switchboards. It is a critical component in electrical power systems that controls, isolates, and protects electrical equipment from damage. Switchgear assembly structures are designed to maximize functionality, safety, and maintenance efficiency in power distribution systems. They involve carefully engineered configurations that house and protect electrical components, such as circuit breakers, busbars, control equipment, and protective devices.

There are different switchgear types, and our focus is on low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) switchgear. LV switchgear is ideal for commercial, industrial, and residential applications that handle up to 1,000 volts (1kV). It provides exceptional control, protection, and distribution of electrical power. MV switchgear is designed for systems rated between 1kV and 38kV, usually involving generators, motors, feeder circuits, and transmission/distribution lines. It is perfect for larger installations, such as utilities, manufacturing plants, and large commercial buildings.
